November To Do List

Teresita Fernandez “Dark Earth (Full Moon)” 2021, solid charcoal and mixed media on charcoal panel.  Image courtesy of Anthony Meier Fine Arts.

Ongoing to December 3 – Teresita Fernandez: Dark Earth at Anthony Meier Fine Arts:  In Dark Earth, the artist transforms raw charcoal into luxuriously textured, abstracted images that challenge traditional notions of landscape art-making and delves into the buried, layered, and often omitted social histories that continue to shape our present-day perceptions of the people and places around us. Each panel in the series embodies an incorporeal scene that refers to the cultural histories of its material makeup—gold, conquest, violence, agriculture—and the fluctuations of power surrounding natural resources.  Anthony Meier Fine Arts is located at 1969 California Street in San Francisco.

Mary Corse “Untitled (Electric Light)”, 2021. Image courtesy of Pace Palo Alto.

November 4 to January 29 – Mary Corse at Pace Palo Alto:  Over the span of her six-decade career, Corse, who is based in Los Angeles and was born in Berkeley, has explored the nuances of light, space, and perception. The artist is widely known for her dynamic, subtly gestural, and precisely geometric paintings and inventive light boxes. The light boxes enabled the artist to explore new frontiers in illuminating her artworks. The result of Corse’s experimentations with electricity, plexiglass, glass microspheres, and traditional painting techniques is a singular language of light and abstraction.  Pace Palo Alto is located at 229 Hamilton Avenue in Palo Alto.

Friday November 5 to November 6, 2022 – Beta Space: Trevor Paglen at the San José Museum of Art (SJMA):   Beta Space: Trevor Paglen will feature the artist’s first sound commission, a new public artwork installed in SJMA’s historic clocktower and resounding into the streets of downtown San José. This is the seventh installation of the Museum’s ongoing “Beta Space” series, a commissioning program that offers artists opportunities to experiment with and exhibit new ideas, materials, and modes of working, Paglen investigates the triangulation between sound, time, and truth. Several times a day, Paglen’s sound piece will emanate real-time temporal and environmental facts.  The San José Museum of Art is located at 110 South Market Street in San José.

“Lands End” is installed in the former Cliff House restaurant.  Image courtesy of FOR-SITE Foundation.

November 7 to March 27 – Lands End, produced by FOR-SITE at 1090 Point Lobos Avenue:  FOR-SITE’s new exhibition, Lands End, invites visitors to wade into an immersive environment where their charge is twofold: to discover artwork in unlikely places and to consider the planet’s health. By bringing together a group of artists from around the world, the exhibition strives to remind viewers of our interconnectedness via global currents of water and air, and to encourage them to partake in all the fresh ideas and perspectives that emerge from the rising tides as we head deeper into this tumultuous century.  The exhibition is installed in the former Cliff House restaurant located at 1090 Point Lobos Ave San Francisco.  Reserved your free timed ticket entrance here.

Zakkubalan “Prism” 2021, installation view.  Image courtesy of 500 Capp Street Foundation.

Ongoing to February 19 – Below the lighthouse is the darkest part of night at The David Ireland House: Working in the intersection of film and photography, Tokyo and New York–based artist duo Zakkubalan, Neo S. Sora and Albert Tholen, present a multimedia exhibition of new and older work at The David Ireland House at 500 Capp Street. The pair has been living in the House throughout the month of October, an unusually immersive occupancy that is a first for The David Ireland House. As they have settled in, they have been keenly aware of the unique sounds, airflow, and shifting light patterns within conceptual artist David Ireland’s historic home turned work of art. These experiences, coupled with their interest in Ireland’s long held fantasy that the House had been built by a sea captain, inform the four new installation works they are creating for the exhibition.  Reserve your ticket here.

Asma Kazmi “After Jahangir”, 2020.  Image courtesy of Berkeley Art Center.

Ongoing to January 15 – Suspended Matter at Berkeley Art Center: Berkeley Art Center presents Suspended Matter, a group exhibition curated by Patricia Cariño Valdez and featuring four Bay Area artists, Julia Goodman, Asma Kazmi, Laura Arminda Kingsley, and Jenifer K. Wofford. The exhibition title borrows from the event of when there is a disruption in the environment — such as erosion or flooding due to rainfall — detritus and particles mix together, creating a new composition of matter that doesn’t dissolve. Suspended Matter refracts our contemporary moment, examining the sentiments and materiality of these unsettled times. Through sculpture, video, photography, and paintings, the artists consider the intimate connections with ourselves, others, and the domestic objects that shape our surroundings. Berkeley Art Center is located at 1275 Walnut Avenue in Berkeley.

Catherine Opie “Sunday Morning Breakfast”; Karyn Lyons “And I’ve Done Nothing Wrong”; Laeh Glenn “Mums in a Vase (green)”.  Images courtesy of Friends Indeed gallery.

Ongoing to December 17 – Mother and Child at Friends Indeed, Bayview location:  Friends Indeed opens their second location with a group show of artworks curated around the theme of mother and child.
