September To Do List

Installation view of “Seven Rivers”, artist Ansley West Rivers, and SFMOMA curator Corey Keller.

Tuesday September 1, 5:00 pm – Ansley West Rivers in conversation with Corey Keller, SFMOMA: EUQINOM Gallery presents a Zoom event featuring artist Ansley West Rivers and Corey Keller, Curator of Photography, SFMOMA. They will be discussing her current exhibition Seven Rivers on view at EUQINOM Gallery through September 5th. Seven Rivers highlights 16 photographic works and two cyanotype maps from the artist’s ongoing depiction of America’s most important freshwater channels including the Colorado, Missouri, Mississippi, Columbia, Rio Grande, Tuolumne, Altamaha, and the Hudson. While Seven Rivers references the American tradition of landscape photography, the images diverge from traditional landscape portraiture by presenting constructed landscapes. By creating compositions on negatives, the artist intervenes in the image to prioritize a record of personal intimacy and emotion over straightforward documentation. The gallery is open by appointment Wednesday – Saturday, 12-5pm. Schedule a gallery visit here or by emailing info@euqinomgallery.com.

Alicia McCarthy “Untitled”, 2020, gouache, spray paint and house paint on wood. Image courtesy of Berggruen Gallery.

September 3 to October 10 – Alicia McCarthy at Berggruen Gallery:  This exhibition presents recent paintings and works on paper by Oakland-based artist Alicia McCarthy. McCarthy is considered an integral and pioneering member of the Mission School, an art movement that originated in San Francisco’s Mission district in the 1990s. Her new work extends beyond the artist’s iconic weave motif, and includes paintings and works on paper that analyze new geometries. While McCarthy’s rainbows and spectrums explore color radiation, her helices and negative weaves disrupt structural boundaries. When her lines become grids and grids become weaves and weaves become entirely mesmerizing patterns, a certain push-and-pull between the singularity of individual mark-making and the holistic nature of the entire image becomes clear.

Berggruen Gallery is open by private appointment by scheduling a vistit here or by emailing info@berggruen.com.

Installation view of works by Léonie Guyer, oil on incised marble. Image courtesy of Interface Gallery.

Ongoing to September 30 – Threshold | Léonie Guyer and Rebeca Bollinger at Interface Gallery:  This will be the last exhibit presented at Interface Gallery. For the past nine years, this independently run, non-profit exhibition space in Oakland has presented works created by a mix of local, national and international emerging and established artists, as well as commissioning new writing and new movement pieces. The exhibition Threshold features two artists in the gallery – Rebeca Bollinger and Léonie Guyer as well as a gallery closing performance by choreographer Stephanie Hewett. The performance will respond to the space and themes of transformation and the unknown and will be available online at a date to be determined.

Interface Gallery is open by appointment by scheduling a time here.

September 10 to 25 – See How Beautiful I Am,  SF Camerawork’s Benefit Auction 2020: Over its 46-year history, SF Camerawork has provided early career opportunities for artists. SF Camerawork’s mission and programs are dedicated to engaging and enriching local artists and their creative work. This year’s Benefit Auction 2020 See How Beautiful I Am will raise crucial funds that directly support artists now. Donating artists receive up to 50% of the proceeds from work sold. Register online with Artsy.net now to be ready to bid when the auction opens on September 10th. Bidding will continue through September 25th.

Hung Liu, “California”, 2020, oil on canvas. Image courtesy of Rena Bransten Gallery.

September 17 to November 14 –Hung Liu: The Sun Also Rises at Rena Bransten Gallery: This exhibition of new paintings continues Hung Liu’s interest in America’s Great Depression and Dust Bowl era through the photographs of Dorthea Lange. Liu’s long interest in ideas of migration, immigration, and displacement, stems from her own immigration story and hardships during the Cultural Revolution, and is what drew her to the work of Dorothea Lange. Liu and Lange share an awareness of photographs as witness, of their ability to shape collective memory, of image as propaganda, and a courage to commit their beliefs.

Rena Bransten Gallery is open by appointment only. Please email Jenny@renabranstengallery.com to schedule a visit.

Erica Deeman, “Untitled 05 (Self Portrait)”, 2020, Cassius Obsidian clay. Image courtesy of Anthony Meier Fine Arts.

Ongoing to October 2, 2020 – Erica Deeman, Familiar Stranger at Anthony Meier Fine Arts:  This exhibition of new work presents 15 intimate self-portraits rendered in Cassius Obsidian clay. In this new series, Deeman continues her reflections on diasporic and transnational movements, Black permanence and the nuance of cultural identity. For the first time, the artist turns the camera on herself. Black and white photographs are rendered into abstracted, hand-made self-portraits in clay with the aid of 3D-printing techniques. The black clay sculptures reflect back contrast and detail in its darkness – a visible tension between time, technology, and the creative technique.

Anthony Meier Fine Arts is open by appointment only, please contact the gallery at 1.415.351.1400 or gallery@anthonymeierfinearts.com to schedule a visit.
