June 3rd – July 16th – Richard T. Walker: Contingency of an Afterthought at FraenkelLAB: Founded by Frish Brandt and Jeffrey Fraenkel, FraenkelLAB is Fraenkel Gallery’s new venue for adventurous artwork in any medium. The second exhibition in the space presents new work by the San Francisco-based British artist Richard T. Walker. Walker employs a variety of media, including video, music, photography, and performance to explore and question the experience of the individual within the natural landscape. Featured will be a series of new works, including neon sculptures, light box installations, photographic collages, and a single-channel video projection. The opening reception is Friday, June 3rd from 5 – 9:00 pm. FraenkelLAB is located at 1632 Market Street in San Francisco.

June 4th – August 27th – Stephanie Syjuco: Neutral Calibration Studies (Ornament + Crime) at Catharine Clark Gallery: This exhibit features works across a wide swath of media that touch on the legacy of historical colonialism, fictional fabrications, and perceptual studies of photographic “neutrality.” Syjuco employs unlikely materials with ingenious vision—found 3-D models, publicly-sourced audio files, “ethnic” carpets downloaded from eBay, photo shoots staged with mass-produced fashion garments, and a large-scale “still life” installation—to create a perceptual clash that bridges historical representation with contemporary forms. The opening reception is Saturday, June 4, from 3 – 5 pm, with an artist talk at 2:30 pm. Catharine Clark Gallery is located at 248 Utah Street in San Francisco.

Friday, June 24th, 6 – 11:00 pm – Southern Exposure’s annual Monster Drawing Rally: This year the event has a new off-site location and will be held at Minnesota Street Project. Over the course of the night, 120 artists at all stages of their careers take shifts to draw for an hour in front a live audience, bringing their private studio practices to the public. As spectators spy on creative process, sketches morph into full-fledged artworks made from collage, watercolor, ink, and graphite or even performative acts. Finished drawings are immediately available for $75 each. The Monster Drawing Rally is an integral part of Southern Exposure’s mission to make art and artists more accessible. This annual gathering is a fantastic way to view new talent, interact with the Bay Area’s artistic community and support Southern Exposure’s programming all at once. Purchase tickets in advance here.

Saturday, June 25th, 4 – 6:00 pm – Curators in Conversation with Equilibrium: A Paul Kos Survey at di Rosa. This exhibition explores the work of Paul Kos and reflects on the San Francisco-based artist’s longstanding engagement with the Western landscape, from his native Wyoming to his second home in the California Sierras. Throughout his career, Kos (b. 1942) has presented an expanded idea of sculpture and continues to employ diverse media and subject matter. Primarily drawn from the artist’s personal collection and the di Rosa holdings, Equilibrium features sculpture, installation, film, video, photography, and works on paper. In conjunction with the exhibition co-curators Amy Owen and Tanya Zimbardo join guest speaker Constance Lewallen in conversation to discuss Paul Kos’s diverse body of work and engagement with the natural landscape. The exhibition is on view until October 2nd in the Gatehouse Gallery at di Rosa, located at 5200 Sonoma Highway in Napa.
