Opening Reception & Awards Ceremony: Thursday, September 7, 6:30–9pm, ceremony at 7pm

September 7th to October 14th- Jim Campbell: Far Away Up Close at Hosfelt Gallery: Through constantly- evolving and continually innovative iterations, Jim Campbell parses one of the most fundamental questions regarding the human mind: what enables us to interpret and understand the world around us?  The 15 new works in Far Away Up Close should, in theory, defy comprehension. They are either so low resolution (too little information) or so high resolution (too much information) that the viewer should not be able to understand the imagery depicted.  Campbell’s work activates the most primitive neural and sensory processes for interpreting visual clues like shape, movement, rhythm, and color.  Tapping into these instincts, combined with the human capacity for complex memory and the ability to extrapolate, Campbell experiments with digital representation as a metaphor for the transmutation of data into knowledge. Opening Reception: Wednesday, September 6, 2017 – 4:00pm to 6:00pm. Hosfelt gallery is located at 260 Utah Street.

Vik Muniz “Handmade: Zigzag cut rectangles (Red)” 2016, mixed media, unique. Image courtesy of Rena Bransten Gallery.

September 9th to October 28th- Vik Muniz: Handmade at Rena Bransten Gallery: Vik Muniz is best known for recreating iconic art historical imagery using unexpected materials (chocolate, garbage, and dirt to name a few).  In this solo exhibition of new work, Muniz’ continues his lifelong exploration of cognitive and perceptual analogies, emphasizes his interest in visual games, and celebrates his sense of play. Handmade marks a departure from previous series; these works contain both representations of objects and the objects themselves and the compositions nod to Op Art and geometric abstraction. Like the “is it live or is it Memorex?” campaign, this series asks each viewer to discern between an object and its representation, and to question the relevance of that distinction.  Rena Bransten Gallery is located at 1275 Minnesota Street.

Artist Talk:  September 9th | 2-4pm
Minnesota Street Project Atrium, reception to follow. Please RSVP here.
